I slowly drifted away from Who after she left, and was thrilled when she returned triumphantly in the new series episode "School Reunion" and then her own series "The Sarah Jane Adventures". She was a good role-model for a small child: feisty, determined, feminine but not girly (although depending on who the writers were, she could be a bit screamy), she let nothing stand in her way.

Some of my earliest TV memories are of watching Lis Sladen, Tom Baker and Ian Marter, dashing about the universe battling aliens and monsters. Sarah Jane Smith meant a great deal to me as a child. With their passing, another part of my childhood was gone, just as the deaths of Jim Henson, Tony Hart and Oliver Postgate had taken away pieces years before. The lovely Nicholas Courtney had died only two months before, but he was much older and had been ill for some time, so although his passing was very sad, it was not such a shock.
